Writing the perfect resume, the first step to getting hired

  • Feature

Are you looking for a job? If you are, spend time to craft an effective resume. Nothing speaks more about your employability than your resume.

A good resume will get you a job interview; a bad resume can mean you won’t get any appointment with the company's human resources department.

If you still haven't crafted a resume, it's time to write one now. It shouldn't take longer than an hour or two.

When writing your resume, make sure to tailor it to the job opening. A general resume isn’t as effective as one written specifically for the opening. While it may be easier to print one resume and then send it to different companies, it won’t increase your chances of getting hired.

Objective statement

Start writing your resume by crafting an objective statement. The objective statement is the first information after your name and address. The statement is "1-3 line of text, summarizing the position(s) you are applying for and/or your main qualifications." It is in the objective statement where you inform people of your career goals.

The Online Writing Lab of Purdue University says "the most common mistake made in writing objective statements is being too general and vague in describing either the position desired or your qualifications."

The site cites this example of an objective statement: An internship allowing me to utilize my knowledge and expertise in different areas.

The website says that statement: "raises more questions than it answers: What kind of internship? What knowledge? What kinds of expertise? Which areas? Be as specific as possible in your objective statement to help your readers see what you have to offer "at a glance"."

After the objective statement, the rest of the resume should be easy to write. List the qualifications that are relevant to the vacant post, highlighting those that support your objective statement.
